  • Today everyone uses the web and  anyone can access the web, it's not just nice people will encounter online. 
  • There are many people who try to trick giving over confidential information so that they can steal. 
  • It is an unfortunate reality, but when using the internet, it should be guarded. 
  • However it shouldn't discourage from using the web or even purchasing products on the web. 
  • It should be mindful of what is done and skeptical of what read on the internet.

 

Types of Online Scams 

There are many types of online scam.the main types of scams are given below :

1.Publishing Scams

  • Publishers will receive acceptance without any Rejection. Nobody likes rejections, especially new writers and so they are most at risk of falling victim to a scam because the scammers quickly accept their work. 

There are Three main types of publishing scams: 

  • Fees to read and critique the work. 
  • There are people who call themselves a freelance editor or literary agent will offer to read and critique the work for a fee. 
  • People who charge to critique the work are probably going to scam. 
  • Writing competitions with entry fees. 
  • There are many contests advertised every year that charge large entry fees.
  • If they require paying anything over about $5, it is almost certainly a scam.
  • Pay upfront for Representation or Publication companies make their money when the book is sold and agents earn their money as a percentage for book sales [no upfront fee]. 
  • So don't pay publishers to publish the book [unless it is self-publish and don't pay a publishing agent to represent the book. 


2.Romance Scam

  • Many people use online dating for any length of time. 
  • They are approached on an online dating site by somebody who lives locally but works abroad, or who lives abroad. 
  • The countries involved may include Nigeria, Ghana, Lvory Coast or other West African country. Trust is built up between person and the scammer. 
  • The scammer suddenly has an urgent need for money for a plausible cause and probably the person is asked to help them out. 
  • The person sends them money. 
  • They need more and more money untill the person has any more, or untill person has any more, or untill they realize what is happening and stop communicating with them. 
  • They are called sweetheart scams and are rapidly increasing.


3.Network marketing scams

  • Network marketing scams are based on Network marketing or multi-level marketing (MLM).
  • All MLM network marketing models require distributors to buy in either through the purchase of products or special licenses. 
  • There is also a strong focus on not just the selling of the product, but also recruiting new distributors.
  • There is often also a big push by upline members the sellers) to purchase training materials and attend conferences


4.Work at Home Scams

  • Work at home scams target the senior citizens stay at home parents, and those who are poor sick or disabled.
  • It is not mentioned in the ads to spend the money to cover a one time joining fee or buy the system or fund the own advertising, or work long hours without pay, or become part of organized crime that is reshipping stolen goods or carrying out fraud.


5.Credit card scams

  • People pay cash using credit cards because it is convenient. 
  • Even though fraud is increasing, the good news is that credit card that is one of the easier crimes to prevent. 
  • It can be nerve-wracking to lose a credit card or find unauthorized charges on the credit card bill.


6.Lottery scams

  • Lottery scams usually begin with an unexpected email notification that you have won a large sum of money in a lottery. 
  • It may say that the email address was collected online and attached to a random number that was subsequently entered in a draw for the lottery.
  • If the person responds in any way to the email, the scanners will send further messages or even contacts the person by phone in an attempt to draw deeper into the scam. 
  • If the person contact the claims agent, the agent will ask the person to pay processing fees administration fees, Legal fees or delivery costs so that the winnings can be distributed however the person will never receive any lottery payment.
  • The person may be asked to provide banking details, a large amount of personal information, and copies of driver's license and passport. 
  • These requests are supposedly to prove the identify and facilitate the transfer of the persons winnings. 
  • However, if the person complies with these requests, the scammers will have enough information to steal the identity.


7.Cash advance scams

  • There are several situations people need a 'cash advance'. 
  • A cash advance loan is a small, short-term, high-interest loan that is offered in anticipation of receiving a future lump sum of cash or payment. 
  • When a person applies for a cash advance loan, it can be done in person, or online.
  • Most people prefer to apply online for privacy reasons. 
  • When the person uses the online option, She/He are required to fill in an application and then submit it. 
  • They usually required faxing some documents to the lender.
  • These documents may include proof of identification, bank statements, latest salary slip and a personal stamped check. 
  • Most of the applications are approved immediately and the processing would usually take about 24 hours.


8.Internet Business Scams

  • Internet business scams may range from get rich quick schemes, work at home scams, impersonating an established business, or offering goods and services that either don't exist, or don't receive what is expected. 
  • It is easy to set up an online business, and then fold up the tent and disappear without a trace and take the persons hard earned money with them!


9.Nigerian Email Scams

  • There may be an email which is badly written and full of spelling mistakes, addressed as 'Dear Friend' or 'Dear Sir/Madam'. 
  • The letter is usually from some supposed government minister, businessman or executor of rich never before heard of extended relative that wants some assistance in transferring a large sum of money (usually multi-millions) in return for a percentage.
  • They request contact information and then typically request money for taxes, lawyer costs" and other fees in advance to make the process happen.  
  • People who fall for these scams usually lose several thousand dollars.
  • The Nigerian email scams continue to be very profitable for the scammers due to the greed and stupidity of people who are prepared to part with money in response to an unsolicited email or letter offering those millions of dollars on the other side of the world. 
  • The Nigerian email scams have developed many variations, sometimes developed around the news.
